National Loyalty Day commemorates not only the patriotism of the American people, but also the historical events that lead to the formation of the United States. The first National Loyalty Day occurred in 1921, during the First Red Scare, when the United States was battling extreme left-wing extremism. During this period of unpredictability, the day was created and initially observed as Americanization Day. The purpose of the event was also to oppose May Day, which was celebrated by employees worldwide.
National Loyalty Day was established by the U.S. Congress in 1955 as the country faced a grave threat from the rise of communism. During this period, Congress felt it necessary to honour America and remind citizens of their obligation to be loyal to the nation. President Dwight D. Eisenhower proclaimed the day a legal holiday to be celebrated with great fervour in 1958. According to the president, it was crucial to observe National Loyalty Day in order to reflect on the nation’s history and appreciate the priceless gift of freedom.
Since then, each new president is required to declare the celebration by requesting that the American flag be raised on all significant government buildings. The president must also order the organisation of ceremonies like parades, pyrotechnics, school events, etc. The primary purpose of the day is to inspire patriotism in all Americans.
