The background of National Nonprofit Day

The Tariff Act was ratified on August 17, 1894. It exempted charitable organisations and charities from the federal income tax imposed on corporations. Despite changes over the years, the exemptions for non-governmental organisations remain stable and continue to facilitate the operations of charitable organisations.
