The background of National Odometer Day

Historically a strictly mechanical device, variants of the odometer have appeared throughout time. Ancient Romans had their own versions of odometers and ancient Greeks had specialists trained to measure footfall. In addition to these innovations, the Han dynasty saw the invention of odometers in the form of a road carriage with a gong. According to the legend, whenever the distance was measured, a wooden figure would strike a drum. Experts consider this iteration of the odometer to be highly advanced (considering the time period) and cite its influence on the modern odometer.

Multiple accounts describe the ancestor of the modern odometer as a device for measuring the distance travelled by waggons and other horse-drawn vehicles. A unique invention by a Mormon pioneer paved the way for the evolution of the odometer. William Clayton affixed his instrument, a ‘roadometer,’ to his waggon, which was travelling west to Utah. This was followed by the invention of the first automobile odometer, the auto-meter, by brothers Arthur and Charles Warner. Additionally, the brothers patented the tachometer, a papermaking machine, an electric brake, and a power clutch. They also created a thermometer for the motor, but the patent was invalidated due to a lawsuit.

While technology has advanced over time, the odometer continues to register our travel distances, albeit electronically.
