Charles Willson Peale was a politician, educator, artist, and historian. He is primarily recognised for his paintings, but he also founded the first major American museum. The Peale Museum in Philadelphia housed the only natural history specimens from North America. Peale presented in the Peale Museum the ancient Mastodon he unearthed near West Point, New York. He established a custom of making science enjoyable and accessible to the general population.
