National Trading Card Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

Towards the end of the 19th century, trade cards were included in cigarette packs to strengthen them. Often referred to as cigarette cards, they advertised cigarettes and occasionally included trivia.

National Trading Card Day occurs annually on February 24. Typically, trading cards are made of paperboard or thick paper. A standard trading card may depict a person, a location, or a real or fictional object. Usually, the images are accompanied by a brief description and texts such as statistics or trivia. Some of the earliest trading cards were related to sports, and cards have been produced for the majority of major sports. Baseball cards are the most popular type of sports card in the United States. Some non-sports trading cards may feature characters from cartoons, comic books, or television. Additionally, collectors use the cards to play collectible card games.

The background of National Trading Card Day

Towards the end of the 19th century, trade cards were included in cigarette packs to strengthen them. Often referred to as cigarette cards, they advertised cigarettes and occasionally included trivia. The first baseball cards were created for a sporting goods company in the 1860s. The most expensive baseball card ever, the T206 Honus Wagner card, was produced by the American Tobacco Company in 1909 and has been sold for more than $3 million.

The Goudey Gum Company began bundling baseball cards with gum in 1933. In 1950, The Topps Company, Inc. began packaging trading cards with bubble gum, and in 1951, it began manufacturing baseball cards. The 1952 Topps Baseball set comprised the first baseball cards to include statistics and playing records. The rookie card of Mickey Mantle was an especially important card in the set. For decades, Topps was the most popular brand of trading cards, both for sports cards and non-sports cards. Before 1981, baseball cards were packaged with gum and then sold separately.

In the 1980s, the production of sports cards increased, and this trend persisted well into the 1990s. There are several factors that determine the value of sports cards, including the card’s condition, the card’s subject’s popularity, and the card’s rarity. When collectors realised the value of their trading cards in the 1980s, they began to treat them with greater care. Some companies began producing digital cards in the 2000s. Today, it is possible to trade, buy, and sell cards online.
