National Trails Day 2023: Date, History, Facts about National Trails Day

The origins of National Trails Day date back nearly fifty years. There were no government-mandated walking and other recreational trails back then.

National Trails Day is celebrated annually on the first Saturday of June, which falls on June 3 this year. The outdoors are beckoning us to go on a walk because it is National Trails Day. This event, organised by the American Hiking Society, seeks to bring together all trail enthusiasts, young and old, and recognise those who help maintain and preserve hiking trails for the enjoyment of all.

The background of National Trails Day

The origins of National Trails Day date back nearly fifty years. There were no government-mandated walking and other recreational trails back then. This changed when President Lyndon B. Johnson signed a law establishing recreational (and also tourist) trails. Over the years, local authorities and organisations have significantly expanded this system’s network of trails. With each new organisation devoted to trekking and outdoor activities, people received more and more incentives to expand existing trails.

Private entities have expanded on government law until now, but a presidential task force has concluded that more must be done to expand the trails and protect the environment. This report entrusted federal authorities with providing local authorities and officials with funding to assist them in the development and maintenance of pathways in their regions. The American Hiking Society, a prominent name in the world of hiking at the time, decided it needed a way to encourage more people to volunteer and participate in activities to maintain and enjoy the country’s hiking trails. As a result, they established National Trails Day, which has been celebrated annually ever since.
