Many people view typewriters as relics of the past. In actuality, the first typewriter was not assigned a patent until 1829. Even so, it wasn't until 1867 near Milwaukee that the first typewriter as we know it was created.

On June 23, we commemorate National Typewriter Day by honouring the written word. Typewriters have a rich history not only internationally but also in the United States. Although they may not be as popular as our trusted laptops, they are a unique and entertaining method to exercise your brain.

The background of National Typewriter Day

Many people view typewriters as relics of the past. In actuality, the first typewriter was not assigned a patent until 1829. Even so, it wasn’t until 1867 near Milwaukee that the first typewriter as we know it was created.

During their heyday, typewriters were necessary and often the only method to type books, articles, and manuscripts accurately. Although they dropped out of favour in the 20th century, the rise of hipster culture has resulted in a resurgence in youth popularity.

Many renowned authors continue to use typewriters to hone their creative processes. George R.R. Martin, Quintin Tarantino, and Jhumpa Lahiri are well-known advocates of the typewriter.

Although the typewriter’s zenith in terms of utility and interest has long since passed, the restoration of typewriters is currently a profitable niche market. Recently, an Olivetti Lettera 32 in pale blue sold for over $254,000. That is certainly something to write home about!
