This day also marked the 22nd anniversary of the Nauruans’ return from Truk. Truk is currently referred to as Chuuk Lagoon. The day is commemorated with parades, dances, carnivals, and remembrance of the independence movement throughout the island nation. Despite being a small nation (only 13 square miles), it is fast gaining popularity among travelers because of its stunning beaches and waters.

Nauru Independence Day History

Up to the late years of the 19th century, Nauru was ruled by Germans. They were aware that Nauru’s natural resources may yield enormous wealth after learning about the island’s rich phosphorus reserves. After World War I, Australia, New Zealand, and England shared responsibility over Nauru! When Japan landed on the island of Nauru during World War II and began using it as an airstrip, this was altered. Australia, New Zealand, and England reclaimed Nauru after the war. Conversely, Australia bore exclusive responsibility for the administration.

When Nauru declared its independence from England on January 31, 1968, it became a sovereign republic. Upon their arrival on Nauru in 1945, the Japanese deported 1,200 indigenous islanders to work as laborers in the Chuuk Lagoon, also known as Truk. On this day in 1946, the Nauruans came home after the Japanese lost. Nauru celebrated its Independence Day on January 31 in remembrance of this historic occasion.

The best way to depict a nation is with its national flag. The flag represents Nauru’s geographic location, which is one degree below the equator. A golden horizontal line represents the equator, while a 12-point white star represents Nauru. Each point represents one of the island’s 12 indigenous tribes, with the white color denoting phosphate, which is the country’s main source of wealth. The flag’s blue backdrop symbolizes the Pacific Ocean. Our national anthem is called “Nauru Bwiema.” The music was composed by Laurence Henry Hicks, while Margaret Hendrie wrote the lyrics in 1862.
