The background of Philippines Independence Day

The Philippines were a Spanish colony for over three centuries and are named after King Philip II of Spain. Magellan attempted to crush Lapu Lapu but failed and was ultimately slain.

In 1571, they constructed Intramuros, which was subsequently renamed Manila and became the nation’s capital. Eventually, Spanish rule prevailed, and a feudal system was established, with the Spanish owning extensive estates and Filipinos serving as the labour force. The Spanish era was prosperous for the Philippines, and their rule was unremarkable. This altered in 1762, when the British captured Manila. In accordance with the provisions of the Treaty of Paris, which was signed in 1763, the city was returned in 1764.

Nineteenth century

Nationalism began to emerge in the nineteenth century. This rebellion developed with the assistance of Jose Rizal, an author who wrote two novels titled “El Filibusterismo” and “Noli Me Tangere” In the Philippines, these novels caused a sensation, and nationalism spread like wildfire. Jose Rizal founded Liga Filipina in 1892, which advocated for reform rather than revolution. Rizal was consequently apprehended and exiled to Dapitan, Mindanao.

Parallel to this, Andres Bonifacio founded the Katipunan, a more radical organisation. Jose Rizal was executed on December 30, 1896 under the pretence that he supported the revolution, although he did not. The revolution began in August 1896. His execution, however, only served to inflame Filipino sentiment, and the revolution grew.

The conflict between Spain and the United States began in 1898. The American fleet defeated the Spanish fleet in Manila Bay on April 30, 1898. On June 12, Filipino revolutionaries encircled Manila and their leader, Emilio Aguinaldo, declared independence for the Philippines. When Aguinaldo was captured in 1902, however, American rule took effect.

Twenty-first century

In 1935, the Philippines were declared a commonwealth and semi-independent under American leadership. As more American teachers were dispatched to the Philippines, the rate of literacy increased. In 1945, the United States promised that the Philippines would achieve complete independence.

The Japanese invaded the Philippines and captured Manila on December 10, 1941. All of the Philippines were now under Japanese control. In October 1944, United States forces returned to the Philippines and recapture Manila. The Philippines attained their independence on July 4, 1946. Manuel Roxas was the nation’s first president after achieving independence.
