The background of President’s Day in Equatorial Guinea

Before we venture into its fascinating history and the origins of President’s Day, there are a few things you should know about Equatorial Guinea. This nation is positioned on the west coast of Africa. Gabon and Cameroon, respectively, constitute its eastern and southern borders. It has a 20-kilometer-long coastline bordered by a vast tropical rainforest teeming with flora and fauna.

President’s Day is a public holiday in Equatorial Guinea commemorating the birthday of President Teodoro Obiang. Obiang is the second-longest serving non-loyal national leader in the globe in terms of consecutive terms in office. He matriculated from military school and held numerous positions under the presidency of his uncle, Francisco Macias Nguema, until August 1979, when he overthrew him in a military coup.

This coup began after Macias issued the order to execute several members of their shared family, including Obiang’s sibling. After overthrowing President Francisco Macías Nguema in a coup, Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo put him on trial for crimes that included the decade-long persecution and killing of members of the Bubi ethnic group. A court convicted Macías and sentenced him to death, and authorities executed him by firing squad on September 29, 1979. In 1982, Equatorial Guinea returned to civilian rule, and voters elected Obiang to a seven-year presidential term.
