Racial Harmony Day 2023: Date, History, Facts about Singapore

Racial Harmony Day is annually observed on July 21. The identity of Singapore as a cosmopolitan nation has evolved. There are significant days, such as Racial Harmony Day, that serve to remind Singaporeans to be proud of their heritage. Singaporeans observe this day by emphasising the significance of promoting harmony and understanding among all populations in our nation, as well as by honouring our unique, multi-cultural nature.

The purpose of Racial Harmony Day is to remind Singaporeans to be empathetic towards people of all ethnicities and religions. The formation of Community Development Councils and People’s Organisations was motivated by a desire to strengthen ties between diverse communities. Racial Harmony Day has witnessed several expansions to broaden its appeal since its inception.

The background of Racial Harmony Day

Racial Harmony Day is more than just another school event; it serves as a reminder that Singapore’s diversity is a source of strength and that harmony must be maintained. On July 21, 1964, the first of two racial riots within six weeks occurred in Singapore, culminating in 36 deaths and more than 500 injuries. Recent viral events involving racism have elicited strong emotions and introspection regarding the prejudice faced by various communities in Singapore.

While the subsequent public debate was occasionally disconcerting, it was useful in addressing the concerns and reminding Singaporeans of the significance of racial harmony in the nation. The historical event serves as a reminder to Singaporeans of the significance of sustaining racial understanding and tolerance among the country’s diverse ethnic groups. In 1998, the Ministry of Education designated July 21 as Racial Harmony Day, with schools hosting programmes to educate children about race and concepts such as diversity acceptance.

The objective was to prevent Racial Harmony Day from becoming just another annual event on the school calendar with little significance. The commitment reminds us to set aside our differences and embrace our Singaporean identities in order to work collaboratively for Singapore’s prosperity. To summarise Singapore’s history, the significance and uniqueness of ethnic harmony day are discussed with the children. This begins the day by informing children of the day’s primary objective, which is to commemorate the unity of people of diverse races and beliefs.
