Every year on August 2, Republic Day is celebrated in North Macedonia. During World War II, the national holiday commemorates the Ilinden Uprising and the first meeting of the ASNOM. It also honours Ilinden’s traditional festival.
The background of Republic Day in North Macedonia
Republic Day, also known as the Day of the Republic, commemorates the Ilinden Uprising against the Ottoman Empire and the first assembly of the Anti-fascist Assembly for the National Liberation of Macedonia (ASNOM), which led to the founding of the Republic of Macedonia.
The Ilinden Uprising was a revolt conducted by the Internal Macedonian-Adrianople Revolutionary Organisation and supported by the Supreme Macedonian-Adrianople Committee against the Ottoman Empire, which controlled a vast region in Eastern Europe.
The revolt was sparked by a desire for complete autonomy over decision-making. Local Bulgarian and Aromanian populations supported it. People believed the revolution would succeed because the Ottoman Empire had been in decline for decades. However, despite the initial success of the insurrection, it was ultimately crushed by the Ottomans’ overwhelming response.
After a decade, the Balkan Wars of 1912 and 1913 divided North Macedonia among Serbia, Bulgaria, and Greece, with the greatest portion going to Serbia. All hope appeared lost. Nonetheless, the Anti-fascist Assembly for the Liberation of Macedonia met clandestinely during World War II, preserving the hope of independence alive.
Several decades later, North Macedonia was incorporated into Yugoslavia, a socialist nation formed in the wake of World War II in Central and Eastern Europe. Yugoslavia consisted of six socialist republics, Macedonia included. In the 1990s, Yugoslavia began to disintegrate, and on September 8, 1991, the Republic of Macedonia was established.
