Italian Republic Day, also known as “Festa della Repubblica” by Italians, is annually celebrated on June 2 throughout the country. This day commemorates the 1946 institutional referendum in which Italians were asked to vote on the form of their governance following World War II. With an overwhelming majority of ballots, they chose to establish a republic with a constituent assembly and exiled the monarchy. On this day, an enormous celebration is held in Rome to commemorate the establishment of the Italian Republic.

Following the collapse and conclusion of World War II, a referendum by universal suffrage was announced for June 2 and 3, 1946. The Italian populace congregated to vote for either a monarchy or a republic as their form of government. On June 10, it was disclosed that 45 percent of voters opted for monarchy while 54 percent of Italians favoured a republic. As declared by the Court of Cassation, Italians inaugurated a new chapter of freedom and exiled the male members of the royal family, the House of Savoy. The country adopted a new constitution on January 1, 1948, transforming it into a unitary parliamentary republic and prohibiting the monarchy from ever regaining power.
Every year, June 2 is commemorated with official ceremonies, speeches, concerts, and parades throughout the country, with a broadcasted, world-famous military parade held in the capital city of Rome. Celebrations are also held at Italian embassies around the globe, where flags are raised, faces are painted red, green, and white, and Italian picnics are held. The Frecce Tricolori’s flypast is an additional highlight of the day. Numerous aircraft soar through the Italian sky, emitting white, green, and crimson smoke trails. This is a site to behold!
