Republic Proclamation Day 2023: November 15 is observed as Republic Proclamation Day in Brazil. On this date in 1889, a military coup d’état led by the opposition succeeded in overthrowing the constitutional monarchy and installing a provisional government known as the Republic of the United States of Brazil in place of Emperor Pedro II. This day is commemorated as the birth of the nation’s republic. Despite the ensuing struggle to overthrow the dictatorship, November 15 remains a momentous occasion that ignited the democratic process in Brazil.

Republic Proclamation Day 2023: History

Brazil, a nation that was formerly under Portuguese colonial rule, transitioned to a constitutional monarchy upon the proclamation of Emperor by the son of the Portuguese monarch. Subsequently, he declared Brazil’s independence from Portugal, instituted an autonomous Empire, and adopted the appellation Dom Pedro I. He ruled until 1831, when he abdicated and transferred the throne to a regent pending the maturity of his son Pedro II, who was five years old at the time.

The Brazilian people’s struggle for democracy was fueled by an ardent aspiration to eradicate slavery throughout the empire. Pedro I failed to liberate the subjugated despite making assurances to that effect; consequently, animosity increased among the working classes. The lack of a male heir in Pedro II’s lineage and the deteriorating Brazilian economy further intensified the revolutionary sentiments. Since the abolition of slavery in 1888, Republican sentiments have continued to fester across the nation. Military combat hero and renowned field marshal Manuel Deodoro da Fonseca was elected by the Brazilian people to lead the rebellion and institute a republic. At first, Fonseca declined the position and even suppressed uprisings. Nevertheless, he developed a sense of solidarity with the republican cause and, on November 15, 1889, spearheaded a substantial military force in toppling the Viscount of Ouro Preto, who was serving as the Imperial Cabinet’s then-chief. Following the subsequent deposition of the monarch, the Rio de Janeiro City Hall proclaimed the establishment of the new Republic of Brazil that afternoon. That evening, the official proclamation was formulated and appeared in the publications the following day.

The day was recorded as one of the least violent coups in history, as only one individual was injured, there were no fatalities, almost no public protests, and Emperor Pedro II offered little resistance. Brazilians celebrate by hoisting the national flag, attending parades and addresses, and socializing with friends and family.
