Retro style is defined as “a style that imitates or is consciously derived from lifestyles, trends, or art forms from the historical past, including in music, fashion, and attitudes.”
Retro Day was established in 2018 by Hermelinda Aguilar, Robert Duran, and Tina Duran. You would have expected it sooner, but better late than never! According to them, the purpose of this annual event is to reflect on life before smartphones, social media, and the Internet became essential to our daily existence. Typically, the “nostalgia cycle” in popular culture refers to the two decades 20 to 30 years prior to the present.
The term was coined in 1972 to characterise “new artefacts that deliberately reference specific techniques, modes, motifs, and materials from the past.” Numerous individuals use the term to define styles of the past. This aesthetic refers to contemporary objects that exhibit characteristics of the past. Retro comes from the Latin prefix retro, which means “backward” or “in the past.” Retro refers to objects and behaviours from the recent past that never seem contemporary.
What else can be said about retro’s history? It resembles a synecdoche. What about the antiquated future instead? Retrofuturism! It is a creative arts movement that demonstrates the influence of prior depictions of the future. If futurism is the science of predicting the future, then retrofuturism is the memory of this science. Retrofuturism, a fusion of antiquated aesthetics and futuristic technology, investigates the tension between the past and the future, as well as the alienating and empowering effects of technology. By manifesting the envisioned artefacts of its parallel reality, it is reflected in artistic creations.
