Independence Day in Rhode Island is on May 4. This day commemorates Rhode Island’s independence, which made it the first sovereign and independent state in the western hemisphere. In the 1700s, Rhode Island was the hub of a triage trade involving rum, slaves, and molasses. During that era, it was a British colony. Rhode Island found that British policies did not meet its expectations. The Sugar Act of 1764 was particularly unpopular in the region. The state’s ports are affluent and have made fortunes through trade. Eventually, on May 4, 1776, the Rhode Island General Assembly declared independence from Great Britain.
