Science Education Day is observed annually on March 14 to recognise the contributions of numerous individuals, both young and old, to the advancement of science education. Did you know that science education in the United States was not standardised until the 1890s, when the Committee of Ten was formed? Science education is a discipline of study that teaches physics, chemistry, mathematics and statistics, computer science, and biology to children, adolescents, and adults. There are numerous science scholarships available for those who wish to pursue science studies.

The background of Science Education Day

The Committee of Ten, which was established in 1892, is responsible for science education in the United States. Previously, scientific education was not standardised. However, as the world began to change as a result of the Industrial Revolution in the late 1900s, people’s interest in science and technology increased. The National Education Association founded the Committee of Ten on Secondary School Studies in 1892, following a conference of thirty prominent secondary and college educators in Florida. The NEA published the Committee of Ten’s report in 1894, after numerous deliberations and seminars. This report moulded the objectives of secondary education and the emphasis of science education.

Between the turn of the century and the conclusion of World War II, standardisation infected school administrators in the United States. To standardise aspects of education, administrators transformed science into a collection of facts to be memorised rather than experienced and comprehended. During the Cold War, when the United States became obsessed with maintaining its military superiority over the Soviet Union, this began to alter. In 1950, the government established the National Science Foundation to initiate, fund, and promote fundamental scientific research and education. This resulted in the ongoing radical transformation of scientific education’s curriculum and instruction. Science courses, such as physics, have evolved from rote memorization of facts to an engaging, living discipline. In addition, the curriculum and instruction made science an accessible field.
