Slovakia Constitution Day is observed on September 1 to commemorate the adoption of the country’s constitution. The day is a public holiday in Slovakia and is known as De stavy Slovenskej Republiky by its citizens. Immediately following its ratification in 1992, the constitution was implemented. This date, January 1, 1993, marked the official separation of Czechoslovakia into the independent Czech and Slovak republics. The day is commemorated vigorously throughout the nation. The streets are filled with traditional singing and dance, and Bratislava Castle is illuminated with the colours of the Republic.

Since then, the territory has been under the dominion of the Moravian Empire, the Hungarians, and the Germans. In 1918, the atrocities of the First World War brought together the Slovaks and the Czech lands of Bohemia, resulting in the formation of Czechoslovakia. Until March 1939, when Germany reoccupied the land, the succeeding decades were marked by extreme peace and tranquilly.
Soviet forces liberated the Czechoslovakian state in the spring of 1945. Consequently, the communist regime began its 42-year reign, which lasted until 1989. In the years preceding the revolution, there was substantial opposition in the areas surrounding the government. Deteriorating faith in the Communist regime was the direct consequence of years of political upheaval, which culminated in a single moment of political discontent when the Slovak National Council first declared its independence to the world.
The Slovak Constitution is a direct result of the Velvet Revolution, a peaceful and nonviolent power transition that paved the way for the establishment of Slovakia. A group of legal professionals led by Professor Juraj Plank drafted the Slovak constitution. The day remains of immense significance to the noble nation of Slovakia.
