Prekmurje has a turbulent past. It was conquered by the Hungarians at the close of the 10th century and ruled by the mediaeval Kingdom of Hungary until the 16th century. Since then, the region has been governed primarily by the Habsburg Monarchy, with brief periods of Ottoman rule. Prekmurje was first incorporated into the Hungarian Democratic Republic and then the Hungarian Soviet Republic after the collapse of the Habsburg Monarchy in 1918. In 1919, it proclaimed independence as the ephemeral Republic of Prekmurje and was subsequently incorporated into the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes (also known as Yugoslavia). Prekmurje was momentarily occupied by the Axis powers from 1941 to 1945, and was subsequently incorporated into the new socialist Yugoslavia in 1945. Since 1991, it has been a part of independent Slovenia.

Slovenes only began celebrating Slovenians in Prekmurje Incorporated into the Mother Nation Day as a national holiday with due importance about 12 years ago. This day is commemorative of the events that lead to the incorporation of the Prekmurje nation into Slovenia. In 1919, more than 20,000 people gathered in Beltinci to support the reunification of Prekmurje with its mother nation and to witness the day when they became a part of a single nation.
