TAKE A WALK OUTDOORS DAY HISTORY

The origins of this holiday are unknown, although it was likely established as a reminder to be physically active. This is especially applicable in today’s technologically driven environment. We spend the most of our day seated in front of a computer screen. As we distanced ourselves from other animals by walking barefoot, the concept of walking is a fundamental aspect of human evolution.

By walking, the Romans developed the concept of a mile. According to their reckoning, one mile was comparable to one thousand military steps. Long-distance walking evolved into a competitive sport over time, as humans desired to demonstrate their extraordinary achievements. In the second half of the 19th century, this sport gained popularity in both America and Europe. The Black Forest Wanderverein was established in 1864 and is the oldest walking club still in existence. New York hosted the inaugural race walk in the United States in 1911. Even earlier, there is evidence that race walks were an official event in the 1908 London Olympics.

Today, we are familiar with a variety of walking styles, including race walking, speed walking, brisk walking, power walking, and marathons, among others. Even walking has become a kind of worship. In 2015, thousands of pilgrims marched to the Camino de Santiago, inspired by the film “The Way,” which depicts an American father trekking along the same route in France in pursuit of the body of his estranged son. Who knew that walking has such a rich past?

If you have a daily routine, such as drinking coffee, reading, listening to music, or sipping wine, combine it with some walking. Thus, you will not need to find extra time in your busy schedule to go for a stroll. Consider the matter carefully.
