She also designed with picots as the primary motif. By the 19th century, many fashion magazines had published tatting-themed issues. In that era, women of all social classes tatted with shuttles made of inexpensively carved wood, intricately carved ivory, and gem-encrusted precious metal. Frequently, women would create exquisite lace for themselves and their families. In some artworks, women are depicted wielding a tatting shuttle or tatted lace gracefully. Tatting was a source of immense pride.
The craft is so highly esteemed that its name exists in over 70 languages. Since the late 1990s, April 1 has been a day to honour tatting and talented tatters worldwide.
