  1. Hindal Mirza Birthday

Abu’l-Nasir Muhammad better known by the sobriquet Hindal was a Mughal prince and the youngest son of Emperor Babur, the founder of the Mughal Empire and the first Mughal emperor. He was also the older brother of Gulbadan Begum (the author of Humayun-nama), the younger half-brother of the second Mughal emperor Humayun, as well as the paternal uncle and father-in-law of the third Mughal emperor Akbar.

  1. Toru Dutt Birthday

Toru Dutt was a Bengali translator and poet from British India, who wrote in English and French. She is among the founding figures of Indo-Anglian literature, alongside Henry Louis Vivian Derozio (1809–1831), Manmohan Ghose (1869–1924), and Sarojini Naidu (1879–1949). Her popular works are A Sheaf Gleaned in French Fields (1877) and Ancient Ballads and Legends of Hindustan (1882), and for a novel in French, Le Journal de Mademoiselle d’Arvers (1879). Her poems explore themes of loneliness, longing, patriotism and nostalgia.

Dina Pathak was an Indian actress and director of Gujarati theatre and also a film actor. She was an activist and President of the National Federation of Indian Women (NFIW). She is best known for her memorable roles in the Hindi films Gol Maal and Khubsoorat. She was a favourite of the Art Cinema in India where she played powerful roles in films like Koshish, Umrao Jaan, Mirch Masala and Mohan Joshi Hazir Ho!.

Bethune College is a women’s college located on Bidhan Sarani in Kolkata, India, and affiliated to the University of Calcutta. It is the oldest women’s college in India. It was established as a girls’ school in 1849 and as a college in 1879.

  1. First Asian Games Organised

The Asian Games, also known as Asiad, is a continental multi-sport event held every four years among athletes from all over Asia. The Games were regulated by the Asian Games Federation (AGF) from the first Games in New Delhi, India, until the 1978 Games. Since the 1982 Games, they have been organized by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), after the breakup of the Asian Games Federation.

  1. INS Vikrant, the First Indian aircraft carrier was commissioned

In 1961 on this day, INS Vikrant, the First Indian aircraft carrier was commissioned. The aircraft played a very important role during the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971. India purchased the carrier in 1957 and its construction was completed in 1961. It was decommissioned in 1997 and preserved thereafter for 15 years till 2012.

Lala Har Dayal Mathur was an Indian nationalist revolutionary and freedom fighter. He was a polymath who turned down a career in the Indian Civil Service. His simple living and intellect inspired many expatriate Indians living in Canada and the U.S. in their campaign against British rule in India during the First World War.

On this day in 1933, in the midst of the Great Depression, Franklin D. Roosevelt was inaugurated as the 32nd U.S. president, and later he led the country out of the Depression and to victory in World War II.
