Uruguay Constitution Day 2023: Date, History, Facts about Uruguay

Uruguay Constitution Day is annually observed on July 18. The holiday, formally known as ‘Jura de la Constitucion de la Republica Oriental del Uruguay,’ commemorates the adoption of Uruguay’s first constitution on July 18, 1830. The state’s General Constituent and Legislative Assembly formulated the constitution, which remained in effect until 1918. Taking cues from the French and American revolutions, the constitution divided the government into executive, legislative, and judicial branches.

The background of Uruguay Constitution Day

This territory, formally known as the Oriental Republic of Uruguay, is located in South America. The country proclaimed independence from Brazil on August 25, 1825. However, independence was not acknowledged until August 27, 1828, when the Treaty of Montevideo was signed at the conclusion of the three-year Cisplatine War. Brazil and Argentina reached an agreement to recognise Uruguay as an independent “buffer” state between them. The nation’s first constitution was adopted on July 18, 1830.

State’s General Constituent and Legislative Assembly formulated the constitution, which was in effect between 1830 and 1918. Taking cues from the French and American revolutions, the constitution divided government powers between the executive, legislature, and judiciary, and has been regarded as Uruguay’s most technically flawless constitution. In addition, it established a unitary republic with centralised government. In addition, the constitution gave the General Assembly the authority to elect a president who could head the executive branch for a four-year term. The constitution grants the president the authority to make executive decisions with the concurrence of at least one of the three recognised ministers.

The Constitution of 1830 instituted a General Assembly consisting of a Senate Chamber and a House of Representatives. Although General Assembly members had the authority to pass laws, they lacked the power to impeach the president or any of his ministers. The constitution established a Supreme Court of Justice and lower tribunals, with the General Assembly having the authority to appoint members of the highest court.
