Venezuela Carnival 2023: Date, Background, Facts, Activities

Historically, Carnival was centred on indulgence and sensual pleasure. However, as time passed, the purpose of the celebration shifted, while the rhythms of the music and the colourful costumes remained.

Each year, Venezuela celebrates Carnival three days before Ash Wednesday. It is held in February and March according to the lunar-based liturgical calendar, and this year it is on February 20. El Carnival is a celebration that dates back to ancient civilizations that celebrated agricultural cycles and Shrove Tuesday. Today, the celebration is renowned for its parades, balls, street shows, performances, and food, particularly meat.

The background of Venezuela Carnival

Historically, Carnival was centred on indulgence and sensual pleasure. However, as time passed, the purpose of the celebration shifted, while the rhythms of the music and the colourful costumes remained. During the 16th and 17th centuries, the festival consisted of athletic competitions in which men and women performed “immoral gestures” while dancing in public. A century later, the Bishop of Caracas, Diez Madroero, modified the celebration to include three days of rosaries, prayers, and parades. This version of Carnival persisted until Mayor José Abalos “refined” it and returned it to its original form. Instead of allowing people to riot during the festival, he ensured that those who watched the parades would be given candy, floats, and encouragement to participate.

The Carnival has become a tradition in Venezuela and is incorporated into regional celebrations. Meat festivals in Puerto Cabello, King Momo celebrations in Maturin, Mérida’s Bullfighting Carnival of America, Callao celebrations, and costume parties in Zulia are examples of Carnival festival customs. The four-day Carnival of El Callao is the largest in Venezuela. The dancing madamas are the highlight of the festival in El Callao.

Each year, Carpano celebrates Carnival with parades that feature decorated floats, vintage automobiles, steel drums, salsa music, colourful costumes, orchestras, and gallons of rum. Throughout the celebration, a carnival queen and mini-queen are chosen. In conjunction with El Carnival, Mérida hosts the Sun Fair. The Queen of the Sun is chosen through a competition prior to the days of celebration. More than 400,000 people attend the Carpano Carnival.
