Vietnamese Family Day is an annual national holiday celebrated in Vietnam on June 28. It was established in 2001 by Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Khiem and has been observed annually since. The background of Vietnamese Family Day

Vietnam is a country with a strong connection to its fundamental cultural values, which are primarily based on Confucianism. This means that Vietnamese people value respect, education, harmony, and family loyalty highly. In western nations, there is a tendency towards individualism, whereas in eastern nations, such as Vietnam, the family is viewed as a unit unto itself. In addition to honouring their parents with utmost respect, children are expected to provide for them. There is also an expectation that all family members contribute financially to the household.

In Vietnamese culture, it is customary for multiple generations of the same family to reside under the same roof. Families can expel a member who does not provide suitable living conditions for other family members and also publicise their accomplishments to the community. In addition, it is customary for the older male to be the head of the household, and children are taught ‘filial piety’ from a young age, which means that younger family members should treat elder family members with respect and care.
