World Book Day 2023: Date, History, Facts about Reading

Reading is an excellent form of entertainment because it requires the use of the imagination, as opposed to merely viewing images on a screen.

We adore literature, and so do our UNESCO colleagues. The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation proposed World Book Day as a day to celebrate the pleasures of leisurely reading.

100 nations celebrate World Book Day, and why not?

Children who read for pleasure on a regular basis have higher test scores, a larger vocabulary, greater general knowledge, and a better understanding of other cultures than those who do not. Whether you prefer traditional paperbacks or a Kindle/iPad/other electronic device, reading is a passport to this and many other worlds. Ensure that children glean the correct information from what they read online, and assist them in developing such positive behaviours. Scholaroo will assist students in navigating scholarship research and directing them to the most suitable postsecondary institution.

Therefore, join us on April 23! Here’s how to channel your inner bibliophile and possibly obtain a complimentary book.

The background of World Book Day

Reading is an excellent form of entertainment because it requires the use of the imagination, as opposed to merely viewing images on a screen. Additionally, there is something so therapeutic about the actual touch of a book, with its fragrance of printed pages and glossy covers. It wasn’t always the case that books are a valuable component of society.

Clay tablets were used when vocabulary and writing were developed thousands of years ago. This evolved into papyrus and parchment. The Chinese created the first form of a book in the third century, although their volumes consisted of thick bamboo pages that were sewn together. Midway through the 15th century, the printing press transformed books into what they are today and made them accessible to everyone. We can now appreciate the prose and poetry of countless authors and poets, from Shakespeare and Tolstoy to George R. R. Martin, thanks to this ingenious invention.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) instituted World Book Day on April 23, 1995. This date is chosen because it is the anniversary of the deaths of William Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, a prominent Spanish chronicler.

Prior to this, there were a number of proposed dates for World Book Day. Initially, Valencian author Vicente Clavel Andrés proposed celebrating the day on a day honouring author Miguel de Cervantes. This implied that it could have occurred on either his birthday, October 7, or his death date, April 23. This date was selected because his death occurred on the same day as those of William Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega. Surprisingly, several other notable authors, including William Wordsworth and David Halberstam, perished on April 23.

There are numerous other dates on which globe Book Day is celebrated throughout the globe. The United Kingdom, Sweden, and Ireland commemorate World Book Day on distinct dates.
