World Day for Animals in Laboratories 2023: Date, History, Facts about Concerning Animal Testing

Each day, before your favourite medical supplies, cosmetics, and toiletries reach the shelves, they are subjected to a battery of tests to ensure they are safe for human consumption.

The annual observance of April 24 as World Day for Laboratory Animals aims to prioritise animal rights. This day was established to bring awareness to the suffering and killing of animals in laboratories around the globe. Each year, millions of animals are used in a variety of industries for experiments and evaluations, resulting in deplorable conditions for the animals involved. This day was established by the National Anti-Vivisection Society (NAVS) more than four decades ago, and since then the campaign has acquired immense popularity and numerous supporters.

The background of World Day for Laboratory Animals

Each day, before your favourite medical supplies, cosmetics, and toiletries reach the shelves, they are subjected to a battery of tests to ensure they are safe for human consumption. This sounds logical and remarkable at first, but we often overlook the tests and experiments conducted in the background to ensure that this occurs. Animal experimentation and research is one of the most out-of-date practises in these industries, despite their continued use.

Animal research has existed since the 2nd century BCE and has been utilised for the duration of biomedical research’s existence. The first modern use of animal testing occurred in the 1800s and 1900s with the development of anthrax and insulin, respectively, and the concept eventually acquired popularity in genetics and toxicology drug testing.

Animal testing has been utilised in a variety of methods in the cosmetic, medical, aviation, and even military industries over the years. Due to the high incidence of animal harm and death, as well as the failure of a number of initiatives, the flaws of this technique have also become apparent. The BIA 10-2474 Drug Trial and the drug TGN1412 are two prominent examples of failed initiatives.

In 1875, the National Anti-Vivisection Society (NAVS) was founded, becoming the world’s first anti-vivisection organisation. London-based non-profit animal protection organisation. The objective is to supplant animal testing with more sophisticated scientific methods.

Animal Defenders International (A.D.I.) is a 1990-founded animal rights protection organisation. Both organisations have acquired immense popularity and made significant contributions over the years to the movement to end animal testing. They now operate as a single entity under the A.D.I. moniker. They established World Day for Laboratory Animals to increase global awareness of the fatal consequences of animal experimentation and to encourage the development of more advanced techniques.
