Zero Discrimination Day 2023: Date, History, Facts

Zero Discrimination Day is an annual global movement that occurs on March 1. The day is a call to action for eradicating all forms of discrimination and promoting social inclusion and tolerance.

Zero Discrimination Day is annually observed on March 1. It is primarily observed by the United Nations and other international organisations and aims to eliminate all forms of discrimination and inequality. Individual cooperation and contributions are required to create an unstoppable movement advocating for peace and change.

The background of Zero Discrimination Day

Zero Discrimination Day is an annual global movement that occurs on March 1. The day is a call to action for eradicating all forms of discrimination and promoting social inclusion and tolerance. Not everyone enjoys the same level of privilege, but it is a travesty to deny someone the right to live as they please. Everyone has the right to live with dignity, regardless of their physical appearance, race, location, or beliefs.

Surprisingly, discrimination is frequently rooted in fear, misinformation, and aversion to the unfamiliar. Creating awareness and dialogue about discrimination is a way to cultivate tolerance and compassion for others. Discrimination is essentially a violation of human rights and must be combated. The good news is that anyone can affect change. One act can create a domino effect that transforms societies based on fairness and equality, despite appearances to the contrary.

Zero Discrimination Day was established by then-UNAIDS Director Michel Sidibé in December 2013. Zero Discrimination Day, inspired by World AIDS Day, a holiday combating intolerance towards those living with HIV/AIDS, aims to end prejudice and unfair treatment of different people. The United Nations has promoted this cause by organising numerous events and creating campaigns that celebrate human life and the freedom to live with honour and dignity, regardless of gender, race, religion, colour, nationality, disability, or occupation.

5 THOUGHT-PROVOKING FACTS ABOUT DISCRIMINATION

A recent survey conducted by the Pew Research Center revealed that black Americans believe their skin colour hinders their ability to advance.

Scientists classify race as a social construct created by humans rather than a biological issue.

Less than 13% of white students attend schools with a majority of students of colour.

While their numbers are relatively low, students of colour comprise one-third of all expelled or suspended students.

Official police statistics indicate that white Americans are less likely to be stopped and investigated.
