Navy Federal started in 1933. The credit union says it has grown to more than 15 million members worldwide. It also has over 380 branches in its network.

Navy Federal Credit Union Membership 2026: Navy Federal Credit Union is a credit union that is owned by its members and run as a nonprofit. It mainly serves people in the U.S. military community. That includes Department of Defense staff, veterans and certain eligible family or household members.

Navy Federal started in 1933. The credit union says it has grown to more than 15 million members worldwide. It also has over 380 branches in its network.

This is different from how many banks work. With Navy Federal, you must meet membership rules first. You cannot just open an account without being eligible.

Who Can Join Navy Federal Credit Union?

You do not have to be in the Navy right now to qualify. The eligibility rules include a wider group tied to the military and the Department of Defense.

Active-Duty Military Members

People serving on active duty in the following branches can qualify:

  • U.S. Army
  • U.S. Marine Corps
  • U.S. Navy
  • U.S. Air Force
  • U.S. Coast Guard
  • U.S. Space Force
  • National Guard

Eligibility can also extend to people in the Delayed Entry Program (DEP), DoD officer candidate/ROTC programs and DoD Reserve components.

Veterans and Retired Service Members

Veterans, retirees and annuitants of eligible military service can also join. Importantly, Navy Federal states that veterans remain eligible regardless of how long they served.

Department of Defense Employees and Contractors

Navy Federal membership also covers certain people connected to the Department of Defense, including:

  • DoD civilian employees
  • U.S. government employees assigned to DoD installations
  • DoD contractors assigned to U.S. government installations
  • DoD civilian retirees and annuitants

Can Family Members Join Navy Federal?

Yes. This is one of the major reasons Navy Federal has a much broader membership base than its name might suggest.

Eligible family members can include:

  • Spouses
  • Parents
  • Grandparents
  • Siblings
  • Children, including adopted and stepchildren
  • Grandchildren
  • Certain household members

So, for example, someone who has never served in the military may still qualify because their spouse, parent, grandparent or another eligible family member has a qualifying military or Navy Federal connection.

Navy Federal’s current FAQ also states that household members, including roommates in qualifying circumstances, may be eligible.

What If The Eligible Family Member Has Died?

Navy Federal says eligibility can continue even if the qualifying veteran or servicemember is deceased. However, applicants may be asked to provide documentation, such as a DD-214, to establish that the deceased relative would have qualified.

What Do You Need to Join Navy Federal?

The application process is relatively straightforward.

According to Navy Federal’s current membership information, applicants should generally have:

  • Social Security number
  • Current home address
  • Driver’s license or government-issued ID
  • A credit card or bank account and routing number to fund the account

If you’re qualifying through another member, you may also need information about the person establishing your eligibility, such as their last name, Navy Federal Access Number or certain identifying information, date of birth and your relationship to them.

Navy Federal Credit Union Benefits

Once eligible members join, they gain access to a broad range of banking and financial products.

1. Low Fees and Competitive Rates

One of the main attractions is Navy Federal’s focus on member-oriented pricing.

Its current benefits page says members can collectively earn and save an estimated $473 per year, based on its 2025 Member Giveback Study. That figure includes factors such as savings dividends, lower loan rates, discounts and other benefits; individual results will vary.

The figure should therefore be viewed as an estimate rather than money every member will automatically receive.

2. Checking Accounts

Navy Federal offers multiple checking options, including Free Active Duty Checking and Everyday Checking.

Free Active Duty Checking can be particularly useful for qualifying active-duty military members because Navy Federal currently advertises:

  • Up to $20 in ATM fee rebates per statement period
  • Free checks
  • Early access to military pay with qualifying direct deposit

The exact eligibility requirements and account terms should be checked before opening an account because benefits can depend on the account and qualifying deposits.

3. ATM Fee Rebates

Eligible checking accounts can receive rebates for certain out-of-network ATM fees.

Navy Federal currently advertises rebates of up to $10 per statement period for select checking accounts and $20 for Free Active Duty Checking.

4. Credit Cards and Rewards

Members can pick from Navy Federal credit cards that bundle different benefits. These can include cash back, points, travel rewards, special promotions, and competitive interest rates.

On its website, the credit union currently promotes the CashRewards card. It says the card offers up to 2% cash back. Still, the card details can shift. That includes the terms, who qualifies, and any promo rules.

5. Auto Loans

Navy Federal also offers auto loans. These cover new cars and used cars. It also offers refinancing.

At the time of the last check, the website lists auto-loan rates starting at 3.89% APR. Your real rate depends on your situation. Lenders review things like credit history, the loan length, the vehicle, and other eligibility items.

Navy Federal also has a car-buying service through TrueCar. Members can look at cars and participating dealers side by side.

6. Home Loans And VA Loans

Home financing is a key part of Navy Federal’s lineup.

The credit union notes its work with servicemembers and veterans. It offers VA loans. It also offers the Military Choice Home Loan. Navy Federal says it ranked among the top 10 VA lenders by overall loan volume and total loan amount in 2026.

7. Savings And Certificates

Members can use savings products and certificates based on different goals.

Certificates may help people who want to keep money set for a certain time. In return, the account pays a dividend rate that is listed. This is also tied to the account rules that apply.

8. Digital Banking

Navy Federal provides online and mobile banking tools for managing accounts digitally.

Its MakingCents platform can help members track spending, create budgets, monitor credit and view financial accounts, including accounts held at other financial institutions.

Members can also use services such as Zelle through Navy Federal’s digital banking platform to send and receive money.

Is Navy Federal a Bank?

No. Navy Federal Credit Union is a credit union, not a typical bank.

That difference matters. Credit unions are run for their members. They are member-owned, so they do not work the same way as a bank that serves the broad public.

Navy Federal calls itself member-owned and not-for-profit. It also says it is the biggest credit union in the world by membership, with over 15 million members.

Federal credit unions usually get deposit insurance through the National Credit Union Administration, or NCUA. The coverage follows the normal limits that apply.

Who Usually Cannot Join Navy Federal?

Just being a U.S. citizen, or just living in the U.S., does not guarantee eligibility. Navy Federal sets its field of membership around certain groups, such as:

  • People in the military who qualify
  • Veterans and retirees
  • Some DoD employees and related staff
  • Family members who qualify
  • Household members who qualify

So if someone has no qualifying military or DoD link, and no qualifying family or household connection, they generally cannot open a Navy Federal account on their own.

Navy Federal vs. A Traditional Bank

The key difference is eligibility. A regular bank usually lets you open an account if you meet its basic rules. Navy Federal starts with membership requirements. You have to qualify first.

Once you qualify, the credit union can cover many needs through that same membership. You can use banking, loans, credit cards and investment and money-planning services in one place. Navy Federal’s member focus can matter too. It may help active-duty people, veterans and their families when they are relocating, deploying or staying overseas.
