Dhammachakra Pravartan Din 2022: The annual Ashoka Vijayadashami celebration honors Bhimrao Ambedkar’s Dhammachakra Pravartan Din 2022, commemorating the day he accepted Buddhism on October 14, (Dussehra).

Bhimrao Ambedkar, India’s first justice minister and the author of the country’s constitution, renounced Hinduism and adopted Buddhism on October 14, 1956. Early on, Dr. Ambedkar decided to quit Hinduism. He researched several religions to see which would fit him best and ultimately settled on Buddhism. Ambedkar opted for “a morally upright faith.”
He had a strong dislike for Hinduism since, in his opinion, it promotes “wrong values and has the incorrect sort of social life.”

Ambedkar had remarked, “By renouncing my ancient religion, which stood for inequity and tyranny, today I am reborn,” following his elaborate ceremony in Nagpur to do so.”
On the day he gave up Hinduism, Ambedkar made 22 commitments. One of them is, “I hereby abandon my previous faith, Hinduism, which is harmful to the prosperity of humankind and which discriminates between man and man and which considers me as inferior.”

Ambedkar actively campaigned against caste prejudice against Dalits and wrote extensively against caste in Hinduism. He describes Hindu society as a “tower” in the inaugural edition of his journal Muknayak, with each level belonging to a different caste. Ambedkar keeps going.

He went on to say that those who qualify cannot go up the levels, and those who reside on higher floors but are ineligible may be relegated to lower feet, said that within this tower, individuals pass away on their birthplace’s soil.

However, he turned to Buddhism and abandoned this organization at the Dhammachakra Pravartan Din. Ambedkar said the following day, “I was born a Hindu, but I shall not die one.”

The Dhammachakra Pravartan Din, as was previously noted, honors Dr. Ambedkar’s commitment to Buddhism on October 14, 1956, after renouncing Hinduism. He visited Sri Lanka in the 1950s to study more about Buddhism and its tenets. After attending the Buddhist World Fellowship Conference, he converted to being a dedicated disciple of the Buddha. He finished writing The Buddha and His Dhamma in 1956, at which point he decided to become a Buddhist. At Nagpur’s Dikshabhumi, he staged open rituals, took the three refuges and five commandments of the monks, and embraced Buddhism for both himself and his wife.
