Ganga Dussehra 2023: Ganga Dussehra occurs on the tenth day (Dashami Tithi) of the waxing moon (Shukla Paksha) in the Hindu month of Jyeshtha. History

Ganga Dussehra is dedicated to the goddess Ganga, and it is believed that on this day Ganga descended to Earth. She descended in order to fulfil her mission of liberating the cursed spirits of Bhagirath’s ancestors. According to tradition, before arriving to Earth, Goddess Ganga resided in Lord Brahma’s kamandal. When Ganga descended to Earth, she carried with her the holiness of heaven.

River Ganga is a gift to humanity as a result of Bhagirath’s tremendous penance; consequently, she is also known as Bhagirathi. Bhagirath descended from the Sagara dynasty. He prayed for the Ganga river to descend and restore life to the earth. It turned out to be a destructive force, however. Lord Brahma therefore requested Lord Shiva to secure the bolts. As a consequence, the Ganges became a placid, life-sustaining river.

The Ganges is not only India’s holy river, but also its lifeblood. This river is revered by devotees in hopes of improved fortune. Importance Of The Ganga Avataran Festival

Dussehra represents ten auspicious Vedic calculations that demonstrate Ganga’s ability to cleanse ten transgressions related to the mind, body, and tongue. The ten Vedic calculations consist of Jyeshtha month, Shukla Paksha, the tenth day, Thursday, Hasta Nakshatra, Siddha Yoga, Gar-Anand Yoga, the Moon in Virgo and the Sun in Taurus. Salvation is attainable through the offering of supplication. It is a good day to purchase expensive items, new automobiles, or new property. Ganga Stotra recited on this day while standing in the Ganges can eradicate all transgressions.

It is believed that bathing in the river on this day will purify the devotee and cure him of any physical maladies. In Sanskrit, Dasha means ten and Hara means destroy; therefore, it is believed that a person who bathes in the river during these ten days is cleansed of the ten transgressions or, alternatively, the ten lifetimes of sins.

Rituals

The majority of devotees travel to Prayag, Hrishikesh, Varanasi, and Haridwar to meditate and take a sacred bath. People honour their ancestors with the pitru puja ceremony. Aarti is performed at dusk on the banks of the Ganges by devotees and clerics using leaf boats adorned with flames and flowers. In order to venerate the Ganges, one must have ten of each item, including ten varieties of flowers, fruits, and betel leaves. While having a bath, ten dips are required.
