HISTORY OF GURU RAVIDAS JAYANTI

Guru Ravidas Jayanti is celebrated on Magh Purnima, the full moon day of the Magh month, in honour of Guru Ravidas’ birthday. It has an annual significance for the religion of Ravidassia. People from various nations gather in India to celebrate this special occasion. To fulfil rituals, devotees take a holy dip in the river.

Ravidas Ji was born in 1450 in the Uttar Pradesh village of Seer Goverdhanpur. He was born into a disadvantaged family, and he was one of the first few individuals to wage war against the caste system. According to legend, Ravidas Ji was reincarnated from a previous life as a brahmin. This great man passed away, and as he lay dying, he fell in love with a Chamar woman and wished that she would become his mother; consequently, he was reincarnated as Ravidas Ji from the womb of the same woman.

He was contemporaneous with Kabir Ji and has several recorded spiritual conversations with Kabir Ji. His disciples bathe in the holy waters on this day. Then, they draw inspiration and understanding from their Guru Ravidas Ji by recalling the great events and miraculous occurrences associated with his life. On Ravidas Jayanti, his followers travel to his place of birth to celebrate his birthday. Ravidas Jayanti is of particular significance to those who follow the Ravidassia religion, Ravidas Ji’s followers, and those who honour Ravidas Ji in any way, such as some Kabirpanthis, Sikhs, and other gurus. It is believed that Guru Ravidas was Meera Bai’s spiritual guide and that he contributed 41 devotional songs and poems to the Guru Granth Sahib.
