Magh Purnima 2024: Importance

Traditionally, the holy bath in the month of Magh starts on the Purnima of Pausha and lasts until the Full Moon of Magh, also known as Magh/Maghi Purnima. The last day of the Triveni Sangam bath is Maghi Purnima. On this day, people fast. Sanatan Dharma, also known as Hindu Dharma, states that bathing in holy rivers is a means of obtaining Lord Krishna’s blessings. In Vedic astrology, Lord Krishna represents the moon. Therefore, on Maghi Purnima, taking a bath in a holy body of water strengthens the Moon in the birth chart by attracting the blessings of Lord Krishna into one’s life.

What is Magh Purnima?

As per the Hindu calendar, Magh is a significant month (Panchang). On Magh Purnima, people fast and take baths in holy rivers. Donating is regarded as being very advantageous on this day. On this day, worshippers offer prayers to Hanuman and Lord Vishnu. The Yamuna, Kaveri, Ganges (Ganga), and other rivers are among the holy waterways.

Hindu scriptures state that on this day, Lord Vishnu resides in the Ganga River and that touching the water has healing properties. It’s said that if you wish while taking a bath in the river, your wish will come true.

India has a variety of regional customs. The state of Tamil Nadu holds a prestigious “float” festival. On the floats, they adorn the idols of Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundeshwara. Then, at the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, which is the confluence of the Ganges (Ganga), Yamuna, and vanished Sarasvati, a massive fair known as the Magh Mela is also held annually.

In Buddhism, too, the day has religious significance. Buddhists hold that on this day, Lord Buddha attained salvation. Buddhist scriptures claim that when Lord Buddha realized salvation, the earth shook. On this day, Buddhists observe rituals, pay respect, chant, pray, and donate to the underprivileged and needy.

Dhaneshwar was a Brahmin who formerly resided in Kantika town. Previously, he was dependent on household donations or alms to survive. Brahmin didn’t have any kids. People used to treat his wife disrespectfully and refer to her by name because of this. They did not even offer the childless couple any donations. They both worshipped Maa Kali for sixteen days in a row as devotees of hers. After being pleased with their devotion, Goddess Kali asked them to make a wish. Each of them requested a child.

Next, on each Purnima, Maa Kali instructed the couple to worship Lord Vishnu and light a lamp or diya. The Goddess commanded them to increase the number of days to 32 by adding one for each Purnima. Beginning with the Magh Purnima, the couple continued in the same manner. They were blessed with a boy child, thanks to Maa Kali’s blessings. Since then, people have worshipped Magh Purnima and revered Lord Vishnu, keeping fasts to fulfill their desires.

Magh Purnima 2024: Customs to observe

  • Taking a bath in a holy river at sunrise is the primary ritual.
  • Following that, people ought to worship Lord Hanuman, Lord Vishnu, Kul Devta, and Ishta Devta.
  • The followers fast and recite Vishnu Sahastranam. Additionally, they prepare treats at home to offer as Prasadam to Lord Vishnu. Additionally, they read or listen to the tale of Lord Satyanarayana.
