Parivartini Ekadashi 2023: Parivartini Ekadashi, also known as Parsava Ekadashi, Vamana Ekadashi, Jaljhilini Ekadashi, and Jayanti Ekadashi, is a festival observed on the eleventh day of Shukla Paksha in the Bhadrapad month. The name “Parsva Parivartini Ekadashi” comes from the folklore that says Lord Vishnu rests and switches his sleeping position from his left side to his right during this time. On Parsva Ekadashi, Lord Vamana, a manifestation of Lord Vishnu, is worshipped in some regions. A person might receive Lord Vishnu’s celestial blessings by observing the holy Parsva Ekadashi.

Rituals

On Parivartini Ekadashi, devotees fast for a full 24 hours. The worshippers only eat one meal on Shukla Paksha “Dashami” before dawn. On Dwadashi Day, the fast is only broken after praying to Lord Vishnu and feeding a Brahmin. Many devotees can observe partial fasts if they are unable to observe strict fasts. Fruits, vegetables, and dairy products can all be consumed. Consuming grains, rice, and beans is forbidden on Parsva Ekadashi. The followers should engage in actions that draw them nearer to God. Along with holy texts like “Vishnu Sahasranaam,” followers of Lord Vishnu perform Vedic mantras and bhajans in his honour.

Mythological Legend:

The legend of King Bali is central to the Parivartini Ekadashi tradition.

According to legend, King Bali was known for his commitment to fairness, compassion, and honesty. His dominion consequently prospered. Bali was born into a family of devils, but he converted to becoming a devout devotee of Lord Vishnu. Indra was expelled from Bali’s realm. Indra left his home and took sanctuary at Lord Vishnu’s feet. King Bali was holding a magnificent Havan and giving out alms to the populace when Lord Vishnu, disguised as a dwarf Brahmin named Vamana, appeared. Vamana continued and requested three steps of land. King Bali consented to meet his request. To everyone’s shock, Lord Vamana materialised in the form of a giant. He measured the entire world with his second stride and the entire heaven with his first, leaving no room for a third. King Bali gave his head for the third step, unable to uphold his promise. Bali’s extraordinary commitment and devotion pleased Lord Vishnu, who pledged to coexist with the king.

Parivartini Ekadashi Vrat’s significance

The Parivartini Ekadashi is observed by devotees in order to receive forgiveness for all sins committed. Since ancient times, Parivartini Ekadashi has been observed, and it brings happiness, money, and good health to those who follow it. It absolves sins and frees followers from the cycle of life and death. Devotees obtain spiritual benefits that aid in boosting their willpower. Due to the fact that Parsva Ekadashi happens during the “Chaturmas” season, it is preferred to other Ekadashi celebrations. The ‘Brahma Vivarta Purana’ describes the significance of Parsva Ekadashi as a dialogue between Lord Krishna and King Yudhisthira.
