Baru nut is now becoming a common ingredient in smoothie drinks as a flavorful and health-boosting ingredient. It is technically a seed of a wild-grown Brazilian legume in the Cerrado, commonly known as the Brazilian Savannah. It also spans portions of Bolivia and Paraguay as well.

In addition to its unique earthy taste, the nut is a tiny powerhouse of nutritional value. A whopping 30% of the weight of a baru nut is protein, according to the Brazilian Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock, and it is also rich in iron, vitamin C, flavonoids, fiber, anti-inflammatory agents, antioxidants, etc. Even though Brazilian nuts add a healthy component to smoothies, the flavor likely keeps them returning for more.

People rarely consume Baru nuts raw; instead, they roast them before they reach the consumer market. The roasting process creates a rich, toasty color, crunchy texture, and nutty flavor reminiscent of almonds, cashews, and peanuts, but with subtle or mixed hints of each of them. Coconut is noted as a distinct flavor in many foods, including cold smoothies and creamy food applications.

Make Your Baru Nut Smoothie

In smoothies, baru nuts can easily replace nuts such as walnuts, cashews, and pistachios with a nut-forward taste and loads of nutrition. You can incorporate a new flavor into bars by blending them with fruits, vegetables, spices, grains, dairy, nuts, and seeds. Consider adding maple syrup, peanut butter, chocolate, coffee, dried apricots, or fresh plums to your recipe.

With figs, almond milk, almond butter, cinnamon, maple syrup, and ginger, you can make a vanilla fig smoothie. This recipe does not require slivered almonds but instead uses Baru nuts. To make it easier to access, dice, crush, or grind the nuts.

You can add baru nuts to yogurt, ice cream, hummus, or couscous, or sprinkle them over salads. Unless you are allergic to legumes, there is no limit to using these Brazilian beauties in your normal eating regimen. However, finding them could prove challenging. Hundreds of new baru trees being planted in the Cerrado of Central Brazil have made it easier to obtain them, as they increase awareness of their health benefits and tasty flavors. For now, your best bet is online retailers, including those that focus exclusively on baruka nut products.
