National Cheese Fondue Day is observed on April 11 annually. Due to the popularity and delectability of cheese, this day celebrates a popular culinary holiday. Fondue is a dish consisting of melted cheese or other components, served in a communal caquelon pot. This pot is set atop a small, portable stove called a réchaud. The bread is then dipped into the cheese with long-stemmed utensils. Additionally, meat, crackers, and vegetables may be immersed in cheese. The components of cheese fondue are cheese, wine, and seasoning. It is a common delicacy that can be found in most establishments and is simple to prepare at home.

The background of National Cheese Fondue Day

Fondue has existed for millennia, but the original recipe for cheese fondue was not published until 1875. Prior to this, there was a delicacy known as “fondue” that resembled scrambled eggs and occasionally truffles. In 1905, cornflour was introduced to Switzerland, which led to the elimination of eggs and truffles and the transformation of fondue into a cheese-based dish. Bread, gherkin pickles, garlic cloves, olives, shallots, and more can be used for dipping, while some people prefer grapes for a lighter meal. The fondue is prepared on a stove before being poured into the fondue container and served at the table.

Nobody knows who invented the first cheese. Some records indicate that it may have been made by accident by an Arabian merchant. As he traversed the desert, the merchant placed his supply of milk in a pouch fashioned from the stomach of a sheep. The combination of the rennet in the pouch lining and the sun’s heat caused the milk to separate into curd and whey. He discovered that the whey quenched his thirst and the cheese’s delicious flavour kept him satiated for hours.

Several distinct customs accompany the consumption of fondue. La religieuse refers to the practise of consuming the browned, crispy cheese at the bottom of the saucepan. Another tradition is what occurs when a piece of bread falls off a person’s utensil. Ideally, if someone’s bread falls off, they should purchase the table a round of drinks!
