National Chia Day 2023: Date, History, Facts about Chia seeds

Chia seeds are loaded with nutritional value. From vitamins and minerals to proteins, fibers, and omega-3 fatty acids, their nutritional benefits are extensive.

On National Chia Day, which is now observed annually on March 23, we give thanks to the earth for providing us with an inexhaustible supply of these flattened, millimeter-sized ovals that pack an unrivaled nutritional punch. Chia seeds have been around for more than 3,500 years, but they did not receive the attention they deserved until 2016. These tiny, powerful seeds are one of the uncommon superfoods on the planet.

The background of National Chia Day

Chia seeds are loaded with nutritional value. From vitamins and minerals to proteins, fibers, and omega-3 fatty acids, their nutritional benefits are extensive. Ancient Mayans, Aztecs, and Tarahumara discovered these’magical seeds’ to be their primary source of energy. Their warriors would tie a handful to their waists and toss a spoonful of seeds into their mouths every so often, allowing them to withstand the long days of travel without stopping to eat. Since then, chia seeds have become a staple of the Aztec diet, and Mayans have adopted the term ‘chia’ to mean’strength’ in their vernacular.

The origin of chia seeds is the minty arid plant Salvia hispanica, which is indigenous to southern and central Mexico. In the 1980s, Dr. Wayne Coates of the University of Arizona discovered chia seeds while conducting research on ancient plants and was taken away by their rich nutritional profile. Not until 20 years later, when the vegan lifestyle began to acquire popularity, did the search for plant-based proteins bring chia seeds to the attention of the general public.

When researchers reevaluated the nutritional value of the edible seeds, the tiny grains were promoted as a “superfood.” Chia seeds have ultimately earned their reputation as one of the healthiest grains on the planet, as they are loaded with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, proteins, fibers, and a vast array of other micronutrients.

In 2016, Mamma Chia, the foremost authority on chia, effectively established March 23 as National Chia Day.
