Whether you are dining out or preparing a meal at home, Fettuccine Alfredo should be on the menu for February 7.

HISTORY OF NATIONAL FETTUCCINE ALFREDO DAY

This meal can be traced back to the 15th century, when Italian chef Martino da Como created “macaroni romaneschi” or Roman pasta by boiling pasta with butter and cheese.

Alfredo Di Lelio is, however, the genuine originator of fettuccine alfredo. In 1908, following the birth of their first child, Armando, the Italian restaurateur attempted to convince his wife Ines to eat. He devised a dish that combined noodles, cheese, and butter, thereby producing a deliciously creamy texture.

Fettuccine Alfredo became his wife’s favourite dish, and because it turned out so well, Di Lelio added it on the menu at Piazza Rosa, his mother’s restaurant. Piazza Rosa came to be known as the birthplace of Fettuccine Alfredo after the dish became an enormous success. Alfredo Di Lelio founded his own restaurant named “Alfredo” in Rome in 1914 and a second restaurant with his son in 1950. In 1977, he built a branch of the restaurant in New York City, where it was an instant success.

The dish arrived in America for the first time in the 1920s. The dish and Alfredo’s restaurant were featured in a number of magazines and travel guides as a result of the positive feedback from returning American tourists. Since then, the dish’s popularity has only increased, with restaurants like Olive Garden popularising their own versions. The inaugural National Fettuccine Alfredo Day was observed in 2005 due to the dish’s popularity.
