National Filet Mignon Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

The 13th of August is National Fillet Mignon Day, which commemorates the creation of the delectable fillet mignon. Steak is the embodiment of luxury and is in high demand among the wealthy in all societies. This is due to the fact that the flesh of a fillet mignon melts in the mouth and is the culinary definition of decadence and splendour. Fillet mignon is essentially composed of tenderloin, one of the most coveted cuts of beef. Therefore, it is not surprising that the cuisine is so tasty and one of the most popular in every restaurant.

The background of National Filet Mignon Day

Fillet mignon is essentially a cut of tenderloin from an animal, such as a pig or a cow. Although pork tenderloin is well-known for tantalising the taste receptors, several religions prohibit the consumption of pork, so their adherents prefer beef fillet mignons. However, each version of meat has its own distinct flavour, and it is recommended that every gourmand sample both.

The history of fillet mignons is obscure, as the delicacy has existed and been served in the United States since before the 18th century and was one of the most popular menu items. Since the term fillet mignon was not coined until 1906, the only distinction is that they were known as medallions or tenderloin steaks. On the other hand, the word’steak’ was first used in the middle of the 15th century in Scandinavia and became prominent in Florence, Italy. In contrast, the term “fillet mignon” was first used in William Sydney Porter’s book “The Four Million,” where it was marketed as an expensive and luxurious cut of meat that was out of reach for the impoverished. Building the dish’s reputation as one that was out of reach of the masses increased its popularity, and it quickly became the most sought-after dish among the affluent and royals. While the dish is now ingested by millions of people annually and is no longer ‘unaffordable,’ it is still pricier than typical meat products.
