National Mushroom Hunting Day is celebrated annually on May 17 and was established in 2014 by mushroom enthusiast Jace Shoemaker-Galloway. You must be able to identify edible mushrooms if you’re going on a mushroom search. You presumably don’t want to hastily go mushroom hunting and consume poisonous ones. Mycologists and mushroom hunters frequently use the spore print technique to distinguish between species with comparable appearances. Educate yourself prior to embarking on a mushroom search.

The background of National Mushroom Hunting Day

Mushroom hunting involves gathering mushrooms in the woodlands or forests, typically for culinary purposes. Also known as mushrooming, mushroom gathering, and mushroom foraging. Some edible mushrooms have poisonous lookalikes, making mushroom hunting both gratifying and perilous. Typically, field guides can assist in distinguishing nutritious from poisonous plants. In addition, there is a technique for identifying mushrooms called a spore print. It is frequently used by mycologists and mushroom explorers to determine the genus of a specimen and distinguish between species with similar appearances.

Numerous species of edible mushrooms, including button mushrooms, porcini mushrooms, chanterelles, morels, shiitake mushrooms, and oyster mushrooms, can be found in the outdoors. In addition to button mushrooms and porcini, chanterelles and morels are native to North America. Shiitake mushrooms are native to East Asia and are considered medicinal. Last but not least, the oyster mushroom was first cultivated in Germany and is now cultivated commercially throughout the world.

Chanterelles and morels are two of the most frequently misidentified wild fungi. False chanterelles (Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca) can resemble nutritious chanterelles (Cantharellus). False chanterelles with sharp-looking gills are considered edible, but their flavour is disagreeable. False morels, such as Gyromitra, appear identical to authentic morels. The typical appearance of Gyromitra species resembles a brain, as opposed to the honeycomb appearance of genuine morels. Due to the presence of gyromitrin, raw Gyromitra are extremely poisonous, but some species are edible when prepared.

NATIONAL MUSHROOM HUNTING DAY ACTIVITIES

Inform yourself

Prior to going on a mushroom search, it is essential to educate yourself. You must at least be able to distinguish between edible and poisonous mushrooms.

Share the news

Inform your peers about the day’s events. Who knows, perhaps one or two will join you. And perhaps they know more about mushrooms, making the edible mushroom hunt simpler.

Obtain fungi

If you choose not to participate in mushroom hunting, you can still find them at the market. It won’t be as spectacular, but that’s alright.

5 FACTS YOU MUST KNOW ABOUT MUSHROOMS

Mushrooms are fungi, and they are more closely related to animals and humans than they are to vegetation.

When exposed to ultraviolet light, most edible mushrooms produce substantial quantities of vitamin D.

Supposedly, magic mushrooms are the healthiest recreational drug.

Chicken of the woods, or Laetiporus sulphureus, is frequently described as tasting like chicken flesh.

Mushroom is one of the foods that contain umami, the fifth primary flavour.
