Pasta is undoubtedly one of our favourite comfort dishes, including spaghetti, fettuccini, macaroni, and ravioli. How did the dish become so ubiquitous in the United States? Or where it even originated? There is some difficulty in tracing the origins of pasta, but many researchers support the hypothesis that Marco Polo brought noodles back from China to Italy in 1271.

Although this theory supports a story of discovery and adventure, all accounts of Marco Polo’s travels are second-hand, rendering their veracity questionable. If Marco Polo did indeed bring pasta back to Italy, he was by no means the first to do so. In Italy, pasta was already a renowned dish by the early 13th century. Other historians have traced pasta to the ancient Etruscans, who ground cereals and grains before combining them with water to generate a carbohydrate similar to pasta.

Early Spanish settlers brought pasta to the United States, but it didn’t become popular until Thomas Jefferson visited Paris and fell in love with macaroni (which at the time referred to any shape of pasta). Years later, when a large group of Italian immigrants migrated from Italy to the United States, pasta became a staple food that was readily available.
