Long-term use of benzodiazepines can exacerbate the symptoms of individuals with anxiety and agitation, as opposed to alleviating them. Using these medications for more than four weeks can also exacerbate suicidal ideation and depression in people who already have these mental health conditions.
Even at modest dosages, the long-term use of benzodiazepine drugs results in dependence. Long-term prescriptions result in the unwitting development of benzodiazepine dependence in ordinary individuals. The World Benzodiazepine Awareness Day, or W-BAD, was founded by activists who had survived benzodiazepine injury and wished to raise awareness about the dangers of this substance and the growing problem of unwitting drug dependence.
The day also encourages medical professionals to adhere to fundamental prescribing guidelines when prescribing benzodiazepines so that patients are aware of the risks associated with long-term use. These principles encourage physicians to support patients who are long-term benzodiazepine users in order to prevent injury and wean them off benzodiazepines and onto safer drugs.
