World Multiple Sclerosis Day 2023: Date, History, Facts about The Nervous System

2009 marked the first celebration of World Multiple Sclerosis Day by the Multiple Sclerosis International Federation (MSIF).

World Multiple Sclerosis Day, which occurs on May 30, encourages conversations about the disease. Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a progressive disease characterised by relapses and remissions. MS is also known as disseminated encephalomyelitis, and its symptoms include muscle paralysis, double vision, and mental/physical issues. Due to a dearth of research studies, the precise causes of the disease are generally unknown. Numerous researchers hypothesise a link between the disease’s onset and dysfunctional genes and/or nerve cells. Moreover, there is currently no permanent cure. Symptoms can be alleviated with the correct combination of treatments and medications.

The background of World Multiple Sclerosis Day

2009 marked the first celebration of World Multiple Sclerosis Day by the Multiple Sclerosis International Federation (MSIF). MSIF was formally established in 1967 as an international organisation that coordinated with national MS organisations from countries such as Turkey, Slovakia, India, and the United States.

The federation seeks to shed light on multiple sclerosis and related scientific research. This year’s World Multiple Sclerosis Day theme is ‘Connect.’ This theme, which runs from 2020 to 2022, focuses on bringing the world together by establishing a connection with each other and the self for the purpose of providing greater care. MSIF spends the entire month of May and the beginning of June promoting MS awareness and hope through themed campaigns.

MS affects roughly 2.8 million individuals each year. This disease is associated with damaged myelin sheaths that cover the nervous system in the brain and spinal cord. The damaged myelin sheaths become covered with lesions or plaques, which gives the disease its name:’multiple sclerosis’ means’multiple wounds.’ Some scientists attribute MS’s causes to genetics, infectious agents, and cell dysfunction, but the disease’s precise causes remain unknown. Among the symptoms are muscle spasms, speech and swallowing difficulties, coordination and balance issues, melancholy, and mood swings, among others. While there is no permanent cure for Multiple Sclerosis (MS), ongoing research focuses on symptomatic treatment with medications and neuroprotective strategies.

5 fascinating facts about the nervous system will blow your mind.

The nervous system consists of two parts: the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) and the peripheral nervous system (the remainder of the body’s nerves).

Located in the spinal cord, the alpha motor neurons transmit signals at a staggering 268 miles per hour.

Typically, neuron cells cannot be repaired or replaced, so any injury can be permanent.

Our minds contain more nerve cells than there are stars in the Milky Way.

The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the human body, extending from the spinal cord all the way to the soles of each foot.
