The 5th of June is Hot Air Balloon Day, and we’ll have an extraordinary celebration this year, including a hot air balloon flight, a historical overview, and, of course, a crash course in hot air ballooning for those who aspire to become pilots someday. Did you know that hot air balloons are the earliest form of flight? In the 18th century, when helicopters were not nearly as advanced as they are today, it was not possible to view the landscape from above using one.
A hot air balloon ride is one of the most exciting ways to appreciate the physics behind them and see the world from a new perspective. Ancient Chinese communities used airborne lanterns for cultural ceremonies and military signalling, laying the foundation for the development of hot air balloons.
In 1783, two brothers, Joseph-Michel and Jacques-Étienne Montgolfier, invented and flew the first hot air balloon in France. They demonstrated the 10-minute flight, which only carried animals, in front of the public. Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier became the first human to travel in a hot air balloon a few months later. Paul Edward Yost, an American who devised the modern hot air balloon, improved the operation of hot air balloons in the 1950s. His invention involved the attachment of a propane burner engine to a hot air balloon that generates and pumps through the envelope’s (balloon’s) mouth. The balloon flight lasted an hour during the test.
Hot Air Balloon Day provides an opportunity to celebrate this mode of flight and raise awareness of air travel. Today, people primarily use hot air balloons for recreational activities, despite their limited accessibility. Manufacturers also design them in a wide range of sizes, shapes, and colours.
