International Picnic Day 2023: Date, History, Facts

For many people around the world, picnics are a welcome break from their daily routines. However, the modern picnic did not exist until the French Revolution, when public parks became widely accessible.

The 18th of June is International Picnic Day, and we’re celebrating simply — with a picnic! Believe it or not, the French Revolution is directly responsible for the picnic’s rise to popularity. Our definitions of a picnic may vary, but picnics are a wonderful way to bring people together for a pleasant day.

The background of International Picnic Day

For many people around the world, picnics are a welcome break from their daily routines. However, the modern picnic did not exist until the French Revolution, when public parks became widely accessible.

Despite the fact that the French are credited with inventing the modern picnic, globalisation and individual cultures are responsible for their immense popularity. 55% of young Americans in 2018 identified picnicking as their favourite warm-weather activity.

And as the concept of picnicking has spread, a multitude of diverse traditions have emerged in a variety of locations. There are very few, if any, cultures in the world that do not picnic in their own unique manner.

Picnics are a great way to appreciate the outdoors and all that your city has to offer. And after a walk or trek, you will be eager for a rest and a delicious meal.

The French were the first to popularise picnics, which they called ‘pique-niques.’

Throughout the early 1800s, London’s Pantheon was the site of official Picnic Society gatherings.

When the cherry blossoms bloom in Japan for a brief period of time, citizens migrate to parks to take in the fleeting smells and sights.

In Argentina and other parts of the Southern Hemisphere, people enjoy picnics during the balmy Christmas season.

As a group tradition, when Greeks begin celebrating Lent, they frequently gather in parks to consume permitted foods and fly kites.
