Prior to the invention of email and social media, the earliest trace of a love letter can be found in an ancient Indian text titled “Bhagavata Purana” dating back approximately 5,000 years. It was sent by princess Rukmini and delivered by her messenger to a monarch named Krishna.

In Ancient Egypt and Rome, the art of formal and informal (love) letter writing was a topic of considerable interest. Until the start of the 18th century, the love letter was taught as a talent. In the latter half of the 18th century, under the influence of the Romantics, literature and writing underwent a significant shift, and the idea of teaching how to compose love letters is questioned. Romantics believed that love letters should originate from the heart. Its content should contain nothing artificial or fabricated.

Due to the numerous conflicts that separated lovers in the first half of the 20th century, the popularity of love letters persisted. Without the internet or mobile phones, the love letter was the only significant exchange and means of communication between distant admirers. In the second half of the 20th century, the internet and technology emerged, and the love letter began to be gradually supplanted.

We have email, social media applications, and mobile phones to communicate with our loved ones in the 21st century. This indicates that the art of sending and receiving love letters has already begun to decline. The term “mail” now refers to email, not tangible letters. The practice of sending and receiving love letters is not yet extinct. Many authors and romantics around the world continue to perpetuate this tradition. Although we do not know exactly who created Love Note Day, it appears to be an initiative to revive this neglected medium.
