The background of National Baked Scallops Day

Few items can match the sweet, savoury flavour of scallops. It is one of the most popular seafood cuisines in America today. However, you will be astonished to learn that this wasn’t always the situation.

In the seventeenth century, Americans disliked the flavour of scallop flesh. Its peculiarly saccharine flavour was unappealing to the general population at the time. Northern Atlantic fishing communities favoured oysters, lobster, and mussels over scallops. Although wild Atlantic scallops were harvested for sustenance, their shells were far more desirable than their flesh.

The United States began to appreciate scallops more in the nineteenth century as tastes changed. The earliest documented scallop recipe was published in 1846 in “Miss Beecher’s Domestic Recipe Book.” The recipe called for scallops to be gently stewed or sautéed.

In the subsequent decades, scallop recipes and dishes became ubiquitous. The recipe testing required frying, stuffing, marinating, and steaming. However, the versatile and simple-to-cook scallop was well-suited to the majority of cooking methods. In the 1930s, scallops had become an integral component of the American diet. Unsurprisingly, they were a favourite among residents of coastal communities. Delicious sautéed scallops became standard fare at seaside shacks.

By the middle of the 20th century, scallops were a common menu item in French restaurants. Around this time, the Coquille St. Jacques gained widespread popularity in American fine dining establishments. The dish is composed of scallops served in their shells, butter, shallots, seasonings, cream, and cheese.

A fine-dining seafood restaurant without scallops today seems almost unimaginable. Every restaurant has its own style, whether provencal, pan-seared, or ceviche. However, baking scallops at home is an excellent method to elevate this shellfish. Therefore, if you’re in the mood for a fancy meal without the inconvenience, scallops baked in the oven are the way to go.

5 essential facts about mussels

The whiskers or “byssus” of mussels serve to secure them to solid surfaces, where they continue to grow.

Each day, a single mussel filters sediment and phytoplankton from 5,2 litres of seawater.

Mussels contain more iron than steak and make us feel fuller for a prolonged period of time.

There is nothing wrong with mussels that do not open during preparation; they simply have stronger adductor muscles.

The female bivalve is orange, while the male is creamy white.
