Most individuals are unaware that chomping gum is not a recent invention. In fact, the history of chewing gum dates back thousands of years, whether for pleasure, to stave off hunger, or to appreciate the flavor of fresh breath.

Celebrate National Chewing Gum Day on September 30 with your beloved chewing gum! Did you realize that chewing gum has existed for centuries, dating back to ancient Egyptian and Greek civilizations? Originally produced from tree sap, it is now typically manufactured from synthetic materials. This holiday is ideal for those who enjoy keeping their breath fresh and infusing each day with flavor.

The background of National Chewing Gum Day

Most individuals are unaware that chomping gum is not a recent invention. In fact, the history of chewing gum dates back thousands of years, whether for pleasure, to stave off hunger, or to appreciate the flavor of fresh breath. This was frequently prepared in the form of boiled resin or wax, which was sometimes combined with mint.

The first chewing gum to be developed commercially in the 1840s was dubbed “The State of Maine Pure Spruce Gum”. As an after-dinner indulgence in 1870, the Adams New York Chewing Gum Company sold orange-flavored sour gum. The following year, Adams introduced Black Jack, a licorice-flavored gum that has been manufactured intermittently for more than a century.

In 1891, Wrigley’s chewing gum was not far behind. Wrigley’s began as a soap and baking soda manufacturer, but later began including complimentary packs of gum with every purchase. Unexpectedly, the gum was more popular than the products, so they began selling it separately.

In 1928, Walter Diemer invented a bubble gum that was less adhesive than others and worked exceptionally well. After several trials and tests, this gum was ultimately tinted pale pink and given the name Dubble Bubble.

In the middle of the 1950s, Dentyne was introduced as an alternative to mouthwash and tooth scrubbing. Then, chewing gum made another important step in its life when the first entirely sugar free, tasty chewing gum was introduced in 1964, when it quickly became a household favorite.

Now, National Chewing Gum Day honors this delectable treat that keeps mouths delightfully busy and fresh!
