National Summersgiving Day 2023: Date, History, Facts, Activities

National Summersgiving Day was first celebrated in 2009, when Robert Solomon hosted a Thanksgiving barbecue for his friends and family to celebrate summer with traditional Thanksgiving foods.

National Summersgiving Day is observed annually on the Saturday following the summer solstice; this year’s celebration will occur on June 24. Thanksgiving is a celebration of life, gratitude for our loved ones, and the gathering of America’s finest thanksgiving foods. Many people have favourite holiday foods, and National Summersgiving Day is a wonderful opportunity to combine them into one large meal as we gather with family and friends to celebrate.

The background of National Summersgiving Day

National Summersgiving Day was first celebrated in 2009, when Robert Solomon hosted a Thanksgiving barbecue for his friends and family to celebrate summer with traditional Thanksgiving foods. Solomon adored Thanksgiving cuisine, so he invited his friends to a late-night dinner of roasted turkey and cranberry Martini. Summersgiving Day would have remained a private event if Solomon had not encountered businesswoman Eva Shure on a flight from Boca Raton to Newark in 2018.

During their conversation, he informed her of the entire event. According to Solomon, she was thrilled and desired a similar experience with her peers. Shure remarked, “People enjoy Thanksgiving. People enjoy summer. This has the potential to propagate.” Together, they created a website, and in 2019 National Summersgiving Day was declared an official holiday to be observed annually on the Saturday following the summer solstice.

The majority of the poultry consumed by Americans each year is consumed on Thanksgiving. Summersgiving Day offers an alternative occasion to consume turkey earlier in the year, rather than waiting until November. Since June is also National Turkey Lovers Month, it is a double commemoration of the popular dish. Thus, Summersgiving Day was born from the love of family, friends, delicious cuisine, and refreshing beverages.
