National Textiles Day 2023: Date, History, Facts about Textiles

The discovery of approximately 34,000-year-old flax fibres in a cave in the Republic of Georgia indicates that textiles have had an impact on human life since the late Palaeolithic era.

On May 3, National Textiles Day, we recognise the importance of textiles in our everyday existence. Clothes, bedding, rugs, and even painting canvases are woven from natural and synthetic materials to create textiles. Valley Forge is one of the main pioneers of sustainable and environmentally friendly textiles and the creator of this fun day. Consider for a moment what existence would be like without textiles. Our attire, interior design, and manner of life would be drastically different.

The background of National Textiles Day

The discovery of approximately 34,000-year-old flax fibres in a cave in the Republic of Georgia indicates that textiles have had an impact on human life since the late Palaeolithic era. Prior to the widespread and easy availability of textiles, humans would have worn animal skin, leaves, and bark to defend themselves from the elements.

Textiles are produced by spinning raw fibres into long, twisted lengths to create a network of flexible filaments. By weaving, knitting, crocheting, knotting, tatting, felting, bonding, or braiding these fibres, they are transformed into fabrics. They are fashioned into the clothing we wear every day, the bedding on which we sleep, the fabric that covers our furniture, and the rugs we use throughout the home. Even the canvases on which we paint are composed of textiles.

In the modern manufacturing era, environmental sustainability is an overarching cause, and this also pertains to textiles. The mission of Valley Forge Fabrics is to live and work in harmony with the environment. They have been producing eco-friendly textiles for decades.

In May of 1977, Dan and Judy Dobin opened Valley Forge in Pennsylvania. One year later, they relocated to New York with their five children and Valley Forge. They entered the hospitality industry in 1980 and never looked back. In 1991, they created their first set of sample booklets to be sent to hotels so that they could choose the upholstery fabrics they desired. Following a year, the Dobin family relocated to Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

In 2007, they introduced their first significant collection of FRESH (Fabrics Redefining Environmental Standards for Hospitality) products. They conceived of National Textiles Day.
